Geraint Thomas won the British Olympic Award 2012
Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas won the Olympic Athlete of the Year award as announced by The British Olympic Association (BOA). The cyclist played an important role in Team Sky’s success and secured a number of victories for himself.
He also gained a lot of popularity after an impressive performance at the UCI Track World Cup in Manchester.
The admirable display of his wonderful skills helped him secure the overall win at the Bayern- Rundfahrt and a second place finish at the Dwars door Vlaanderen.
British Olympic Association’s chief Andy Hunt mentioned, “The Olympic Athlete of the Year award celebrates the excellence of athletes who represent the very best of British talent in their respective Olympic sports”.
He further added, “I wish all the award winners the very best as they enter the home straight of their preparations for London 2012, or continue their journey towards Sochi 2014".
Thomas was impressive at the French grand tour as he finished 3rd at stage 2 and 5th at stage 5 of the event.
He also held the Young Riders Jersey from stage 1-7 of the race, along with the Combativity award at stage 12.
The 25-year-old impressed the home crowd at the Tour of Britain 2011 with his overall win at the point’s classification. He finished third at stage 3 and fourth at the stage 4 of the race.
The Welshman started his professional career with Team Recycling.co.uk in 2006 and moved to Barloworld Team from 2007-09.
He finally accepted the offer from British professional cycling, Team Sky, in 2010 and will continue with the squad for the third consecutive season.
Geraint was overwhelmed on receiving the award as he mentioned, “If I am honest, it's a massive shock to receive this great award! But it is also a massive honour".
He further added that cycling is emerging as a major sport and winning such a reward is a big achievement.
Thomas has shown interest to ride at the London Olympics and would prefer the home event over the Tour de France 2012. He will try his luck at the Giro d’ Italia 2012 to ensure that he is in perfect form for the London Olympics.
