I am curious to learn more about Geraldton as it has come up recently in a family conversation.

Any information would be great. Population? Weather? Living costs? Rentals/house prices? Good/bad suburbs? Schooling? And is it suitable for younger children? etc etc etc.

Thanks in advance.

  1. It's not "hot tropical"

It's about 1/3 of the way up the western australian coast.  Winter is wetter than summer.

Because it's about 5-6 driving hours from Perth, food, petrol and household stuff will be more expensive.  Depending on what job you have, you'd be offsetting that against your higher income than in the city.

There are a couple of high schools, including a private/catholic schools, so there's oodles of primary schools.

  2. Check out the City of Geraldton Greenough website.

  3. weather is hot tropical its not cheap to live there about the same as most small cities i do know that the house prices are around about $295.000 to 3 mil.Try google put in geraldton western aust and see how many hits you get,you should be able to find out most things there. good luck

  4. I moved to Gero from Perth 9 months ago, and I love it. Its one of the most friendly, laid back places I have been to. The weather is fantastic, especially in the winter, low to mid 20s every day, with the occasional wet day thrown in. It does get windy in summer, but what coastal town doesnt?

Population is around 30,000. House prices are high, but not as bad as Perth. $400,000 will get you a reasonable house in a decent suburb. There is a rental shortage, and to rent a nice house will cost $300 plus a week. There are only a few bad suburbs - namely Rangeway, Spalding, Karloo. Plenty of good ones, and heaps of great beaches.

There are 3 high schools, 2 are private. I have heard that the public high school can be a bit rough.

Geraldton is 430km from Perth, you can get here in 4hrs if you dont have a break. And its not always hotter than Perth, in summer its about the same. On Australia day in 2007, it was 40 in Perth, and 28 in Geraldton.

Come for a visit, you might be surprised at how nice it is here, and also how progressive.

  5. its a nice little racist backwater
