Gerard Granollers, Flavio Cipolla advance to the second round – Guzzini Challenger 2011
Gerard Granollers ousts Andrea Agazzi 6-2, 6-1
World number 284 Gerard Granollers of Spain crushed Italian Andrea Agazzi, ranked 800th in the world, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the first round at the Guzzini Challenger in Recanati, Italy on Tuesday. The match lasted
for just an hour and six minutes.
Granollers took the lead straightaway as he broke the Italian in the first game of the first set and held his next service game to go ahead 2-0. The Spaniard broke again in the fifth game and consolidated on the double break of
serve to seal the set 6-2. The 22-year-old kept his first serve percentage at 57 percent and fired three aces in the first set. Granollers won a whopping 42 percent of the first return points in the opening set.
The Spaniard lost only a single game in the second set, breaking Agazzi three times and holding all of his own service games to clinch the set 6-1. Granollers did not lose even a single first service point in the second set. The
unseeded converted three of the four break points he received on Agazzi’s serve in the second set.
Granollers will meet world number 144 Kenny de Schepper of France in the round of 16.
Flavio Cipolla upsets Arnaud Clement 7-5, 6-1
Italian Flavio Cipolla, ranked 106th in the world, prevailed over former world number 10 Arnaud Clemet of France in straight sets 7-5, 6-1 to proceed to the second round. The match lasted for an hour and 50 minutes.
Cipolla and the Frenchman failed to hold their serve once in the first ten games of the opening set, squaring off the score at 5-5. Clement could not hold his serve again in the eleventh game and lost the twelfth game to go down
5-7. Cipolla handled his opponent’s serve very well, clinching an incredible 54 percent of the first return points in the opening set.
The Italian bashed Clement in the second set as he allowed the French to win just a single game, breaking him three times to seal the set 6-1. Cipolla kept his first serve percentage at 81 percent, bagging 76 percent of the first
service points. The 27-year-old kept winning return points, claiming a whopping 50 percent of the points on the first returns. The Italian won all the three break points he received on Clement’s serve in the second set.
Cipolla is slated to play Czech Jan Minar, ranked 720th in the world, in the second round.
