Gerard Greene beats Yu De Lu in the wild card round: China Open 2011
Gerard Greene beat China's Yu De Lu by a frame score of 5-2 in the wild card round of the Bank of Beijing World Snooker China Open 2011 at the Beijing Students University Gymnasium in China on Tuesday.
The world number 28, Greene, who beat Fergal O’Brien by a frame score of 5-2 in the final qualifying match of the China Open, was already a hot favourite for his wild card round match.
Despite producing a match-highest century break of 117, De Lu couldn’t register a win in more than two frames. The overall score-line between the players was 90-8, 65-16, 62-29, 16-78, 9-117, 71-52 and 60-53.
Greene took the opening frame with quick breaks of 38, 32 and 20 to take a 1-0 lead. In the second frame he was again the first one to be among the balls but this time he only managed a break of 23. However, later on he took the frame after a bout of safety
play to lead by 2-0, which he later extended to 3-0.
In the fourth frame, the Chinese bounced back with the breaks of 25 and 52 to reduce the deficit to 3-1, and produced a mind boggling match-highest century break of 117 to come within one frame at 3-2.
It looked as if he believed he could pull off the victory, but instead he lost control of his emotions in the sixth, breaking down on 40 and was punished by his opponent. The 37-year-old Irishman, Greene, showcased some of his flawless safety skills to leave
De Lu down by two frames with three to play.
In the seventh frame, De Lu was among the red balls three times but went out of position every time, and was forced to play safe until Greene got an opportunity to finish the game off with a classy break of 60.
Gerard Greene has now set up a potential first round match against former world champion, Peter Ebdon.
