Gerard Greene confident of winning the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
The current world number 32, Gerard Greene believes he and his teammate Mark Allen, who currently holds the 12th spot in the world rankings, can win the 2011 PTT-EGAT Snooker World Cup for their country, Northern Ireland.
Greene and Allen both will start their campaign on Monday at the Bangkok Convention Centre in Thailand. They will first meet India in their group, which also contains Brazil, Belgium and Britain’s Mark Selby and Ali Carter.
Both have an attacking style of play and since all the pairs are supposed to play a five one-frame series according to the new format, Greene thinks they have a bright chance of winning the trophy.
However, Greene on the same note admitted there will be a lot of upsets, as he knows that every player in the tournament is capable of potting balls.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “Mark Allen and myself are both left-handed, both good potters, both attacking players and get on well so it's not a bad pairing.”
“It's such a short format where you play one singles frame each, then alternate shots doubles and then reverse singles. But all the players here can pot balls and make shots so there will be quite a few shocks,” added Greene.
The players from Scotland and England are currently favourites for the tournament, as they have some of the best players of the world with them. However, Greene reckons if they are able to avoid the favourites in the start, they can really take their country
to the World Cup glory.
“I see our chances as pretty good,” added Greene. “We have England in our group so if we can top the group and avoid the favourites (Scotland) in the other group then that will help.”
The first upset of the tournament has been seen, as Pakistan have beaten the Irish team 3-2 but let’s see if Northern Ireland can also put a shock on the cards.
