Gerard Houllier names Gary McAllister as his Aston Villa assistant
New Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has named Gary McAllister as his assistant manager.
McAllister played under the Frenchman at Liverpool between 2000 and 2002, winning the treble of League Cup, FA Cup and Uefa Cup in 2001, and was once dubbed “my most inspirational signing” by the former Anfield boss, who snapped up the Scot as a 35-year-old from Coventry City.
The former midfielder has managerial experience at both Coventry and Leeds United, and leaves a coaching role with Middlesbrough to link up with Houllier again.
Former Villa player Gordon Cowans has also been appointed as Houllier’s first team coach. The midfielder played 527 times for the Villains, and was part of the team that famously won the European Cup in 1981.
Robert Duverne, Houllier’s fitness coach at Lyon between 2005 and 2007, will take up the same role with the Premier League side.
The new coaching staff will officially start their jobs on Monday, with their first match a Carling Cup tie at home to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night.
