  1. gerbils are cheaper and have to be sold in a pair becuase they are social animals. Gerbils bite less and are much easier and kinder than hamsters. gerbils are smaller and live longer than hamsters if treated well enough and hamsters eat more and need more stuff. Hamsters need a wheel and a ball to keep them exercised but gerbils only need one ball and no wheel otherwise their tail will get stuck in it, however if you don't like or are scared of rats/mice then i would say get a hamster. get gerbils they are much kinder, less violent animals that don't eat ror drink much and all they need is a cage with a little bit of food, water and some bedding. Oh and a carboard tube to chew on like a toilet paper roll.

  2. Both can be wonderful pets. It's up to you to research and choose which is the best for you. I, myself, have two gerbils. They're wonderful; I love them to bits and pieces, and I'd never trade them in for any other pet.

Please keep in mind that gerbils are social and should be kept in same s*x pairs. The price of gerbils varies. From a breeder, you could get a pair for $10-$15. From a shelter, you could get them for a low adoption price of $5-$15 either each or for a pair. From a pet store, you could get them anywhere from $10-$15 each.

Niceness is not based on the animal as a species. It's based on the animal as an individual. For example, you could have a nasty hamster and a nice gerbil, or a nice hamster and a nasty gerbil. It all depends on how they're bred and raised. If you tame it and treat it correctly, it should be nice.

Keep in mind that the costs above are only for the gerbil alone. It does not include a cage/tank and supplies. Do some research. Learn about both gerbils and hamsters to find which is the best for you.

  3. i have 2 gerbils they were like only $10 each and i already a cage from my bros old hamster and sense they don't need a wheel its even cheaper and not as noisy at night and they dont smell as bad and they sleep at night like us so you can play with them during the day.

  4. depends on what you're tryin to catch with it.

  5. definitly gergil they r smater, cleaner, more affectionate, and make generaly better pets.

  6. Hamsters don't deserve the bad rap they get about the whole biting thing, if you are kind, gentle and understanding with your Hammie, he/she will return the favor. Hamsters and Gerbils have very similar needs but my experience is laid heavily in the hamster's corner.

Personality-I have cared for hamsters, mice, rats, cavies and in my opinion "which one is nicer" isn't based on whether you get a hamster or a gerbil it's based on how your personality will mesh with theirs.

Pros and Cons- This would be for you to decide.

    -Hamsters are nocturnal

    -Gerbils are diurnal

    -Hamsters are very mellow

-Gerbils are much more active than hamsters.

-Syrians must live alone while Dwarf hammies can live in groups or pairs.

    -Gerbils must live in pairs.

The best thing to do would be go check out a pet store, breeder or (preferably) an animal shelter and just interact with both types.

*Gerbils and Wheels* I would recommend getting a wheel if you decide on Gerbils, but it must be a solid surface wheel and it must be free standing. Wodent Wheels are the best on the market, I have one for my hamster and he loves it.
