Question:

Gerbil Problem?

My gerbil, Cosmo, has been acting odd, he's trying to bite me when I go to pick him up, and tries to attack me when I give him food. I asked the vet about it, but he was of no help. Saying that it was a behavioral problem and gave me a few tips. I tried them for about 6 weeks, no improvement. Its gotten worse instead of better. He's not in pain, because he squeals when he is in pain. He got a hold of me last night. No serious damage, so now, when my little neice wants to hold him, I have to say no, which breaks my heart, because she loves him. He's only 7 months, so I know its not old age and whatever comes along with that....

Can anyone tell me whats wrong with him?

Thanks in advance.

  1. I'm so sorry! I had a rat that was nice, but then bit me, braking skin. His cage was too small, that's what I think was his problem.  So, maybe Cosmo is acting that way because his cage is too small. If its not that, then maybe he needs a friend. If since hes WAY over 10 weeks, get a divider (if its an aquarium) and every day make them go to the other side, so that they can smell what the other ones like, and get use to him. Ill give you a link for more info.

If I'm still not helping whatsoever, i would suggest buying him off, lol. Get a lot of chew toys and other fun things. He might just be worried/scared. And make sure that your hands DON'T smell like food or any other animals. Also, please don't disturb him while hes sleeping. Gerbils sleep both day and night, and are awake both day and night, depending on the time.  I'm SO sorry if i didn't help.
