Gerbil food...?

Does anybody know what kind of gerbil food doesn't have sunflower seeds in it? I can't find any that doesn't.

I want to use the sunflower seeds as treats, because i've tried lots of healthy treats, like yogurt drops, but they don't like them. They LOVE sunflower seeds but i don't want them to be in their everyday food.

  3. well try petco/petsmart becuase when i go there, they have food WITH sunflower seeds and they'res special kinds without it so look around

  4. I don't know of any foods that don't contain them, but if you try Nutriphase, it has smaller and fewer seeds that I mostly leave in the food.

The amount in it won't cause problems for their health, but I still pick a few out each time for treats. :]

  5. There's a brand of hamster/gerbil food found at Wal-Mart called Wild Harvest. It doesn't have sunflower seeds. It does have pumpkin seeds, though.

To be honest, sunflower seeds, I have learned, aren't as bad as people think. If you pick it out of their food, you greatly change the nutritional values. As long as you don't give your gerbils the choice of eating only the sunflower seeds, they'll be fine. As long as the food isn't totally loaded with sunflower seeds, it's fine to leave them in.

I used to pick the sunflower seeds out all the time. Then, with a little research, I learned that I really don't need to. It changes the food, and I want to do what's best for my gerbils health and well-being.

I fill my gerbil's food bowl, and leave it until they finish almost all of it before refilling. It doesn't give them the chance to just eat what they want. They have to eat a bit of everything. I, very recently (yesterday, actually), gave them a mix of Brown's Encore Premium and Wild Harvest. I haven't seen them eat it yet, but it gives a little more variety to their food.

  6. Yup! Oxbow puts out a high quality hamster/gerbil food: http://www.oxbowhay.com/link.sp?page=Hea...

Good on you for looking for a better diet. You're absolutely right, excess sunflower seeds are not good in the diet. They are very healthy in moderation though.
