  1. male and female together. Male and male will fight. female and female may fight too.

  2. do not house any gender gerbils together, female/female would be best if you had to they don't stink if they are taken care of properly the names are stupid, being honest we are not in the ancient rome time

  3. When you go into find your pet gerbil, always always always look for clear eyes, lots of movement, a nose that is free from discharge and blood.  And make sure you look at the bottom near the tail, no blood, no stool or wetness.  Take a good listen to the breathing when you hold them.  These are all perfect examples of what not to buy.  These diseases KILL.  One is a wet tail and the other a respiratory infection.  When you buy a single pet, unless mating you won't be able to go back and get another one later.  So if your plan is to get 2 now.  GET THEM FROM THE SAME LITTER AT THE SAME TIME...  Boys are cleaner and you don't deal with the menstral cycle as with females but both are good animals.  DO NOT MIX them or you will have a lot of babies...  I am an employee with PETSMART so I work with this guys on a daily routine.  Hope I have helped.  And your names are cute.  I am in favor of Ceasar...  Good luck and make sure you check them out really good.  Look at the habitats where they come from too.

  4. Why do you not want to adopt?  Just wondering.  All my gerbils are shelter-gerbils, and they're all unique colors and were young when I got them.  (And were healthy/ better looking then pet store gerbils, as well as cost less.)

I haven't noticed any smell from my gerbils, but any animal will stink if you slack on cleaning.  My boys are.. well, very energetic, as are the girls. :P  Supposedly boys are supposed to be calmer as they get older.

Definitely keep them in same-gender pairs, as you don't want tons of babies.  They shouldn't fight if properly introduced- dominance wrestling is normal, but actually drawing blood/biting/hurting each other is not.

I like Spartacus better for a name.

    Good luck!

  5. female/female pair. dont go to petland. petsmart is the best, petco is the 2nd best. the names are kinda dumb, but name them what you want =]] since you are getting 2, name one caesar and the other spartacus

  6. Why don't you want to adopt? Opt to adopt. There are lots of shelter animals in need of a good home, and you may find great, young gerbils in your area. It's much better than supporting pet stores and the mills they get their animals from.

However, if you absolutely will not adopt, look for a healthy, happy gerbil. They should have clear, bright eyes, a clean nose and bottom, no bite marks, a sleek, straight tail, clean, glossy fur, etc. Ask a pet store employee to handle them to see how they interact with humans. They may be skittish, but they shouldn't be overly frightened or bite hard enough to break skin.

A male/male pair or a female/female pair is fine. I don't think there's a difference between the genders in terms of smell or aggressiveness. Males tend to be more laid back, larger, and less territorial. Females tend to be more active, smaller, and more territorial. Both do great in pairs, though. If you're looking for a trio or more, you'd be better off with males. You could easily find a male that's active and a female that's laid back. Each gerbil has their own little personality.

I like the name Spartacus. Since you're getting two, you can use both Spartacus and Ceasar :]
