Question:

Gerbils Bedding?

So I'm getting Gerbils and worried about my room smelling. Also I was at Petco, just researching and I asked a worker how often I should clean the cage? He then answered with once every week. But at petco in there Gerbils cages they don't use carefresh and odor blocking bedding. So I'm asking do Gerbils smell if you use CareFresh and how often do you have to clean the cage if your using Carefresh. Any other suggestions for bedding would be a great help. Also any harasses out there for Gerbils. Also are Gerbils playful, I mean am I going to be able to hold and I guess play with it.

Thank You in Advance!

  1. With hay as my bedding I did clean the cage for about a month as the hay hide the smell

But my cage is about 100 gallons so they lot of place to poo in

  2. Ok, I'm currently using Carefresh and i like it because it doesn't go through the wires and land on my floor(i had to move them form their tank becasue it was too small)and also it comes in so many colors!

Gerbils don't smell anyway and you do not need to clean their cage every week. I clean mine about every 2 weeks and i never smell them and they sit in my bedroom.

Other bedding choices are Soft-Sorbent and Aspen. Aspen is great for burrowing. You don't really need any odor-blocking bedding.

Gerbils are very playful and entertaining. I let mine run around my room and they don't make hardly any messes! They aren't exactly easy to hold and they would much rather run around than sit in your hand, but they definitely don't bite and are very sweet!

    Congrats and good luck!

  3. i do not own gerbils, but i know that carefresh bedding DOES absorb the smell very well, and is the best you can get

also, pet stores don't usually use carefresh because the downside is, it is very expensive :(

but it is the best you can get, trust me :)

  4. I have had my gerbil for 2 years now and they dont really smell. I barely notice them. =]

And you dont have to clean them once a week, onse every two weeks is fine =]

And they are not really playful but they are social. =D

    Hope I helped!

  5. good choice on picking gerbils.  they are very friendly and bold.  you will be able to play with them.  As long as you dont use cedar or pine bedding, price is all you have to look at because most beddings do the same.  this is the cheapest bedding i could find- http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...

i use it for mine and they like it.  Some gerbils like timothy hay for bedding because they can chew and eat it.  I have used it a few times but they cant burrow to well in it after a few days so its really a win-loose situation with that.  I can get by without cleaning my tank for a week and a half and even at that time they still dont smell. Also make sure that you save all of your toilet paper rolls for them, they love chewing those.   have fun with your gerbils!
