My brother has two gerbils Streak (Father) and Tails (son) and they have been together for over a year very happily. They were always so sweet together and seemingly adored each other but yesterday my brother saw they were fighting. I'm not sure if it was boxing but Tails does have a bite on the side face (no blood thankfully). It's usually Tails who starts the fighting, they're in separate cages next to each other now but we're not sure what to do next.

  1. probably like guinea pigs, father and sons are fine until the sons mature and the dad sees them as a threat to their dominance

youll probably have to keep them seperated from now on

  2. i have 3 male gerbils in the tank together (brothers) We bought them at the same time they play fight all the time are you sure they were not just play fighting to pass some time i had to go out and buy my gerbils a ovitrail cage thing that has tunnels and places to explore they love it i would advice him to buy this  it cost £19.99 from my local pet shop honestly they love it

  3. well

do they fight like rip each other fur out cause when they groom it looks like they r fighting

r u shore they r grooming not fighting

trust me i have 14 gerbils

and my female as fight alto but i split ted them up if there fur come of spreads them in different cages

  4. obviously you know it was a show of dominence do you have a tank you can add tubes and such if so reintro by conecting a seperate cage if they fight seperate again

  5. Do you know if there's anything specific they're fighting over, such as a toy or maybe even food? Is the cage/tank large enough to house both of them? How big is the cage/tank?

Sometimes, it's hard to figure out why they may be fighting. I would recommend you put a split up. That way, they can still interact through mesh, but can not get to each other. Here's a good site for it:

Just leave them in there until you're confident that they'll be ok when you lift it up. Try to get them back together. If possible, try getting them a larger tank/cage if the current one is too small.

  6. Wo that a big mistake there, to males in the same tank. Even if they are son and father they are very territorial and will fight to the death, which most rodents you are only meant to keep 1 male with numerous females, but never two males together. you will need to separate them soon as you can before they kill each other. They will need to live apart. Hope everything goes well
