  3. Do not breed pet store gerbils.

They can cause birth defects because their history is not known.

They may be inbred, or they babies may end up inbred.

    IF you insist:

Do you have a small animal vet and funding in case the pregnancy or birth goes wrong? Or if one severely injures the other?

Do not breed if you don't have both cash and a vet.

Do you know both of their medical histories? Pet store gerbils should not be bred, as you don't know their family history with defects or injuries. The gerbils you have now may even be inbred.

If you got them from a breeder, call and ask the breeder's advice.

Are you planning to keep the babies or adopt them out?

If you are planning on keeping them, you need to get enough living spaces for them- new cages, etc.

If you are going to adopt them out, you should have enough homes BEFORE the babies are conceived.

    How old is the female?

If she gives birth and decides she isn't ready, she will eat her babies.

If she is too old, she will ignore them, or eat them again.

The male needs to either not be housed with her during the pregnancy, or removed IMMEDIATELY after the babies are born, or he will impregnate her within minutes or hours or birth, that's how gerbils work.

He can stay in and help to take care of the babies, but she will be pregnant again. That puts a strain on her, weakening her body and shortening her lifespan.

Do you know enough not to try and change the bedding for a week or so after the babies are born, so as not to upset the mom? If they smell like humans, she will eat them.

Babies need to be separated from mom at 5 weeks, since after that they will breed with mom and each other, cause more inbred babies.

These babies may have missing limbs, internal organs, or eyes. You have a responsibility to care for each and every one of them.

If you cannot find homes, you must keep them in gender- separate cages- preferably tanks of 15 gallons or more- and be prepared for possible fighting after 6 weeks of age. This would be called "declanning", and after that they must be kept separately, since the chances of them getting along later are slim.

But then, since gerbils should be kept in pairs, you will need to adopt a new gerbil and use the split-cage method over two weeks to assure a safe introduction.

That is a lot to think about and do research into.

    Fun, huh?
