Gerd Kanter observes season’s best throw at second edition of the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial
Gerd Kanter, the 32-year-old discus thrower from Estonia, while contesting in the second edition of the Kamila SKolimowska Memorial in Warsaw, Poland, marked his season’s best throw of 67.99m to name the event title.
Kanter, the veteran discus thrower, who bagged the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal for observing a throw of 68.82m, struggled to dominate the contest before a crowd of over 3000 spectators. Building on comparatively smaller throws, he reached on to his
best when the fifth round was over. However, it was the throw of 67.34m, observed in round three, which provided him the momentum to eye the event title.
Landing over a metre behind the Estonian player was Zoltan Kovago from Hungary, who is also regarded as a world leader in the discipline. To finish second on the podium, the best he could produce was a throw of 66.69m. Finishing third in the event was Robert
Urbanek ,who for throwing his personal best of 64.37m, thwarted Piotr Malachowski’s way for third finish in the event. Malachowski, the local athlete, fell for 63.93m in the event.
The signature Hammer Throw competitions in the event observed Tatyana Lysenko, world champion from Russia over Anita Wlodarczyk, the former world champion. The competition was quite close as it witnessed the former producing a throw of 72.19m, while the
latter settling for 71.02m.
On Men’s side, Pawel Fajdek, the thrower from Poland, who also happens to be an European under-23 champion, secured the victory for producing a 77.96m throw in the final round of the contest. The results produced by him helped him prevail over Krisztian
Pars, who finished at 76.97m, and Primoz Kozmus (72.88m).
In Men’s shot put contest, which proved to be an interesting watch, there had been four categories of throws where 5, 6, 7 and 8kg weights were used. In all contests, it was Canadian athlete, Dylan Armstrong, who for marking a throw of 88.67m emerged as
an ultimate winner. For finishing on the top of the podium he defeated Tomas Majewski, an Olympic champion who was behind him for a throw of 88.64m.
