Gergo Kis dominates Men’s 800m freestyle final - 2011 Hungarian Long Course Nationals
Gergo Kis of RAJA 94 Uszoklub dominated the Men’s 800m freestyle event on the opening day of the 2011 Hungarian Long Course National.
Kis won the gold medal of the distant freestyle swim in a fabulous time of 7 minutes and 55.30 seconds. Gergely Gyurta of A Jovo SC Veolia followed him on the finishing wall, by displaying a remarkable swim in 8 minutes and 04.70 seconds. Gyurta remained
almost 10 seconds ahead of Patrik Rakos of Balaton UK Veszprem, who secured the podium for the bronze medal, by clocking a third fastest time of 8 minutes and 14.31 seconds.
Kis is the European champion of the 800m freestyle at the 2008 Eindhoven European Long Course Championships. He also won the bronze medal of the 400m freestyle at the same European Championships in Budapest.
The national champion completed his initial lap of the swim in a fastest time of 26.48 seconds, leaving his following swimmers marginally away. He gained a lead of almost one second over Gyurta, as he competed his first 100 metres of the race in a time of
54.49 seconds as compared to Gyurta’s 55.9 seconds effort.
Similarly, the national gold medallist earned a lead of almost three seconds in the initial 200 metres of the race, where he touched the wall in a time of 1 minute and 52.24 seconds. Gyurta, who remained considerably away in the first four rounds, completed
his first 200m swim with a timing of 1 minutes and 55.94 seconds.
Kis continued to shower his expertise in the distant freestyle swim and completed his first half of the 800m swim, with a timing of 3 minutes and 50.95 seconds. He was almost seven seconds away from his following swimmer, Gyurta, who touched the wall in
a time of 3:57.58 seconds. The champion continued his dominance and was the first one to finish the 800m swim, clocking a time of 1:55.30 seconds.
The arena applauded for the impressive swims of their national swimmers, while the winners received awards and accolades for their dominating performances.
