Gerhard Berger: I would sign Lewis Hamilton as the number 1 driver if I had a team – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger has recently stated that if he had a Formula 1 team, he would have signed Lewis Hamilton as his number 1 driver as he is one of the best drivers on the grid currently.
“I would love to have Lewis (Hamilton) as number 1 in my team if I had one. (Hamilton) together with Sebastian Vettel. Although maybe not, because that would not work, (it would) cause havoc!” he said.
Berger claims that the seven-time former world champion Michael Schumacher is definitely not one of the fastest drivers on the 2011 grid and stated that Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel are the best three drivers of 2011 up until now.
“In my view, Seb, Alonso and Hamilton are the three best drivers out there. Vettel performs perfectly. Alonso suffers from minor mistakes, but he has not got a car on par with Seb's. Lewis is the best at overtaking, but with a huge amount of risk. It's usually
50-50 if it works or if he collides,” said Berger.
Alonso has been scoring some pretty good results despite the fact that Ferrari are not as fast as either McLaren or Red Bull Racing team in terms of pace.
2010 was no different for him either but still the Spaniard was able to secure the drivers’ standings lead until the very last race after which Vettel snatched the title away from him. Hamilton on the other hand was competing for the title as well until
the last race last year but his chances of winning the title after a couple of ‘crashes’ were ruined a lot.
Even in 2011, Hamilton has been crashing a lot as a result of which he is now out of the 2011 championship chase and it seems that Vettel will once again take the title but this time, very dominantly.
Vettel is around 100 points ahead of all of his championship rivals and it seems that in order to defeat Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari would have to come up with a reliable and consistent all-rounder car for 2012.
