Gerhard Berger claims only Vettel, Rosberg, Hamilton and Alonso faster than Schumacher in 2011
Former Ferrari and McLaren driver Gerhard Berger has recently stated that only Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso are faster than the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Michael Schumacher.
“To the best boys, so Vettel, Rosberg and Hamilton, he is missing two or three tenths. But that means that in a Red Bull he could still win races. I still respect him highly. Apart from the three I mentioned I only see Alonso in front of him,” said Berger.
He claims that Schumacher cannot defeat these young, fast drivers anymore and one has to admit that the sport has evolved a lot since the seven-time former world champion retired out of the sport in 2006.
“Schumi can no longer beat the young, super fast drivers because of his age, which is quite normal. But he can join in the ranks behind them,” he said.
Currently, he is driving for Mercedes GP which is in 4th place in the constructors’ standings which means that the team is just the best of the rest.
Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing are way ahead of them in terms of points as a result of which Mercedes were unable to make it in the top running teams of the sport this year once again despite the fact that they had a pretty good pre-season testing
phase.
Mercedes GP’s team principal Ross Brawn claims that he is not going to quit until he produces a race winning car for the team and same is the case with Michael Schumacher who wants to score some good results before retiring out of the sport for good.
The team has admitted that they cannot make the team a race winning one overnight therefore they need time.
He has already been highly criticised from all ends and it seems that he does not have the pace he used to have during his peak time in the sport.
