Gerhard Berger praises Sebastian Vettel’s decision to stick with Red Bull – Formula 1 news
Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger believes Sebastian Vettel has made the right choice by sticking with Red Bull for the next couple of years, as he is in a very strong position to continue fighting for titles.
After the first few races of the 2013 season, it was rumoured that Mercedes had contacted the reigning world champion for a possible seat in 2014. Moreover, some people believed that he would move to Ferrari in the near future.
However, none of that proved true, as Vettel has extended his deal with the current team and will not be leaving them anytime soon.
According to Berger, “Sebastian knows very well that he has the perfect environment and the best car. It is a thousand times better to be world champion five times with Red Bull than not once with Ferrari. He can think about Ferrari maybe some time in the
future when he can have a winning car.”
The young German has been delivering some excellent performances over the past several years. He became the youngest triple world champion in 2012 and will be looking to win at least a couple of more championships before moving on to another team.
He is currently in a very good position and might once again become the champion in 2013. However, there are a lot of more races left in the season and some of the rival drivers such as Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen have the ability to catch up.
Looking at the championship standings, Berger said, “Even before the season started I said Sebastian was my favourite. But we're not even half-way yet, and the tyres are also going to play an incredibly important role.”
Although Vettel looks in a comfortable position at the moment, things will not be easy for him after the next few races, as Ferrari will be quite strong. This will allow Alonso to fight back in the championship and put pressure on his main rivals.
It will not be easy for the Spaniard though, as the current champion has enjoyed extremely good luck in the opening rounds of the season. If that trend continues, he will run away with the title once again.
