Gerhard Zandberg seizes Men’s 50m backstroke gold – Swimming news
Gerhard Zandberg of South Africa captured gold medal of the Men’s 50m backstroke on last day of the 2013 Mare Nostrum Circuit in Canet, France on Sunday, June 16.
The South African swimmer lived up to the expectations of his supporters in the single lap backstroke discipline as he rushed his way towards the finishing end for gold medal. He experienced tough battle from his following swimmer but with his unrelenting
efforts, he managed to secure the title.
He enjoyed a lead of just one arm length over his closest competitor as he concluded his race in a phenomenal time of 25.22 seconds for the title.
The gold medallist was traced by Jonatan Kopelev of Israel, who was 0.31 seconds apart and stepped on the victory stand for silver medal by producing a fabulous effort of 25.53 seconds.
Following that, the arena saw commendable efforts of Aschwin Wildeboer of Spain, who was only fractions apart from securing the second position. The Spanish swimmer tried hard to improve his place in the final metres of the event but remained only 0.06 seconds
slower from Kopelev and ended third in the event with the timing of 25.59 seconds.
The bronze medallist was chased by Juan Miguel Rando of Spain, who remained only 0.06 seconds behind and surfaced on the finishing end for fourth place by producing a time of 25.65 seconds.
The Spanish swimmer was trailed by Gareth Kean of New Zealand, who was 0.06 seconds away from overpowering his preceding finisher and hit the wall for fifth place by posting an effort of 25.77 seconds.
Guy Barnea of Israel, who remained 0.06 seconds slower and emerged on the finishing wall by clocking an effort of 25.77 seconds, obtained sixth position of the race.
Subsequently, the crowd witnessed gruelling efforts of Lavrans-Veieroe of Norway, who was 0.09 seconds behind and transpired on the finishing end for seventh place by producing a time of 25.86 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Falix Wolf of Germany, who was almost half a body length behind and transpired on the finishing end for eighth place by touching the wall with an effort of 26.49 seconds.
In addition, Zandberg expressed happiness over his victory in the 50m discipline whereas the winners were called upon the medal rostrum for medals and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the race after the session.
