Gerina Piller finishes tied for 6th spot at LPGA Championship 2012
American Gerina Piller looked more than thrilled at the end of the Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012, as she finished tied for the 6th position, after shooting an explosive 68 in the final round.
Piller did not expect to perform so well at the Locust Hill Country Club, New York, as she was among the underdogs before the start of the major event.
However, finishing strong at one of the most prestigious LPGA tournaments has put her in the limelight.
The American golfer kicked off the final round in an impressive style, as she drained two straight birdies on the first two holes. She parred the next two holes and stunned the fans once again by recording another birdie on the difficult par-3 5th.
Piller played against big names like the current world number one Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen and others, but she appeared to be in high spirits.
Speaking to the media at the end of the tournament, the proud golfer said that she was pretty happy to surge past most of the top-flight LPGA contenders.
She said that she faced trouble shooting balanced strokes in the first three rounds, but improved her game in the final round.
Piller has been struggling to make a name for herself in professional golf, but according to analysts, her stellar performance in the major tournament has helped her gain appreciation.
She pointed out that she just played a natural game, as she knew that her nerve will play a decisive role.
“I just wanted to have fun. I was playing with Jenny Shin. She has been a great friend of mine. I actually had my husband write a lot of Bible verses in my yardage books, and I realized there are lots of things, and I just kept reminding myself that there
is bigger things out there,” the American star said.
Mentioning the last hole, Piller said that she did not lose hope after making a double bogey on the 17th.
“That was huge, definitely boosted my confidence. I've been working with a guy named Lanny Basham (phn). I just tried to recall running programs and just try to do the same thing”.
