I was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on a US military base, when I was born I received dual citizenship, I am currently back in the states now and was wondering if I still had my German Citizenship... I haven't been there for roughly 15 years, but I am interested in moving there myself here soon...

  1. I was born in America.  My father is an American and my mother is German.  When I was two we moved back to Germany and shortly after, my parents divorced.  I lived in Germany with my mother for 16 years.  When I was 8 I was adopted by my mother's new husband.  I am now 18 and want to live in America with my real father.  I have a SSN (card) and my birth certificate but now have a new name.  Can I legally change my name back to my birth name? If so, how?  Does this take away my American Citizenship?   I feel like I was so young and did not have a fair chance to decide who I am...

  3. You forgot one thing here. If you are born to 2 American parents on German soil, you are NOT German unless at least 1 of your parents has been a legal resident for at least 8 years (and has an unbefristete Aufenthaltserlaubnis). All military personnel are here under the SOFA and therefore they are not legal residents. This means that any children born on a military installation in Germany by 2 non-German parents is NOT German.

Here is a paper put out by the US military about it:
