German Bundesliga: Bayern Munich vs. Mainz – Mainz score all the goals as they beat Munich by two goals to one
Maniz continued their fine run of form in the Bundesliga, as the team went on to beat the German giants, Bayern Munich, in the German league fixtures. The match was being played at the Allianz Arena, which happens to by Munich's home stadium.
This fact made the defeat a whole lot worst for the hosts.
Sami Allagui, played a brilliant ball to Thomas Tchel, which saw the away side take the lead in the fifteenth minute. But an own goal by, Bo Svensson, gave Munich some hope of salvaging a point in the night.
However Munich failed to really get back into the game and Adam Szalai, scored in the seventh minute, to give Mainz the winner of the night. This win meant that Mainz were now one win away from matching, the all time victories recorded
at the start of the season.
Mainz got the lead, after some brilliant displays in the fifteenth minute, when Lewis Holtby pounced on an error by Danijel Pranjic. The player stole the ball and then ran to the right of the penalty area; and then managed to whip in a
low cross, which was met by a rather cheeky and spectacular back heel by Allagui.
Mainz continued to play with confidence, despite Munich retaining far more possession of the ball. The only time Munich actually started to look dangerous was near the end, of the opening half. Apart from that Munich seemed like a team
that had all the possession in the world but couldn't do anything with it.
The home side, managed to get a goal back via some luck. Mark Van Bommel, crossed a ball into the area and to Munich's delight it was headed by into the goal by Svensson.
The defender was not aware of the fact that his keeper was off his line and as a result the moment ended in disappointment for the defender and the team.
However Mainz did not let that goal, change their game plan. The away team managed to secure all three points of the night, near the eightieth minute mark.
Andre Schurrle passed the ball to Szalai, who turned to volley an unstoppable drive into the top right corner of the goal.
Daniel van Buyten almost scored a very late equalizer in the eighty eighth minute, however the defenders shot was tipped over by the Mainz keeper and the away side went on to win the game.
What was rather interesting about the game was the fact that, Munich dominated the possession and the shots taken area. The home side had seventy percent of the possession and recorded fourteen shots towards the goal.
On the other hand the away side had thirty percent of the possession and only seven shots on goal. However Mainz still managed to come away with the win, proving it’s what you do with your time on the ball that's important, rather then
just keeping the ball mindlessly.
