German Bundesliga getting even more exciting as season nears completion
German Bundesliga, this season, has been one of the most exciting campaigns in Europe and as the season reaches towards the finale, many are still wondering who will lift the much revered Bundesliga Shield (salad bowl) come May. 14th May is the exact date for the final announcement of the winner of the magnificent plate that Bayern Munich held last season. The final assault after the international break starts tomorrow and it’s one last chance for all 18 teams to reach their goals.
Bettor.com takes a look at some interesting facts that may or may not count by the end of the season.
A juggernaut call Borussia Dortmund
A sign of hope for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich is that Dortmund’s lead at the top of the table is getting slimmer as they lead Leverkusen by ‘only’ seven points. However, never before in the history of the Bundesliga has a team been able to surmount a lead this big at this stage of a season. It was in the 2001/02 season when a 5 point lead was overhauled by a team to lift the Bundesliga title. Ironically, it was Borussia Dortmund who overhauled Bayer Leverkusen’s lead as they started the assault on Match Day 31. Is it going to happen again or will Bayer Leverkusen avenge their lost title? Only time will tell.

It is one of the most interesting facts for 2010/11 season; 34 percent of Bundesliga games have been won by visiting sides. For last season, the figure was a relatively lower 31 percent. Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Mainz and Borussia Monchengladbach have taken more points away from home than they have taken at home. 83 times in the league this season, away teams have won the games. With 7 rounds of football yet to be played, this percentage is likely to rise even further.
Standing on the edge
So far, Bundesliga has witnessed 10 managerial causalities, be it termination or resignation, while 2 more will not be at their respective clubs by the end of this season. This is not a record right now but seeing how many managers are at the precipice, the record may be overhauled; in 2003/04 season, 14 managerial changes were seen. Let’s hope, for sake of the worried managers, this foreboding statistic is not overhauled.
Penalty kicks aren’t a ‘dead-sure’ no more
Amazingly, penalty kicks haven’t been guarantee of goals. The referees have pointed to the spot 77 points but had to whistle for a goal only 45 times. At 67 percent conversation ration, this is not a good statistic. Last season, only 12 penalty kicks were saved and this year’s conversion rate is the worst in the history of the Bundesliga.
Battle for survival
In the relegation battle, Kaiserslautern will face 5 teams from the bottom half of the table in their last 7 games. They must believe that they can avoid the drop and if they don’t, it’s simply Bundesliga 2 next season.
Strange events
In the past eight years, 4 different teams have managed to win the Bundesliga shield. Sadly, surprisingly or even shockingly, 3 of these teams are in a relegation quagmire this season. Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga in 2004, 2007 and 2009 respectively. Who would have thought that these three giants of German football would be in such misery with the season drawing towards a close?
