German Citizenship through Marriage?

If an American marry's a German, and the couple plans on living in Germany, how does the American become a German citizen? How long does it take? And do they have to give up their American citizenship.

As I understand it it's virtually impossible to get German citizenship even for a child with a German parent.  

To gain it through naturalisation you would have to give up your American citizenship and among the conditions you would have to become fluent in German, this link has information on what else you would need to do.
