German Marcel Kittel wins Sparkassen Munsterland Giro 2011 - Cycling Update
Skil-Shimano team’s Marcel Kittel took his 15th victory of the season as he put in a tremendous performance in the Sparkassen Munsterland Giro 2011 on Monday, September 3. The race started in Emsdetten and finished in Munster.
The German racing cyclists took the total of 4 hours, 24 minutes and 44 seconds to cover the long distance of 194.5 kilometres. In the final kilometres, he easily beat German national rider John Degenkolb in their homeland of Germany.
The long break came from the group of two cyclists Linus Gerdemann (Leopard Trek) and Josef Benetseder (Vorarlberg). They gained an advantage of 6 minutes and 30 seconds over the peloton. Gerdemann was able to hold his pace and won the five ranked climbs
to take the overall King of Mountains title.
After 150 kilometres, both of them increased their pace and quickly joined the other two riders of Pieter Serry (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) and Peter Schulting (Cycling Team Jo Piels). The sprinters’ team controlled the situation of the race and in the
final three laps, all of them worked hard together to extend the lead.
Degenkolb launched an attack with Kris Boeckmans but the duo was unable to take a lead and Kittel proved too fast for the others, crossing the line to take victory.
Kittel secured various victories in this season, as he took the four stages of Tour de Pologne and Quatre Jours de Dunkerque. He also grabbed the overall Delta Tour Zeeland and runner-up spot in Rund um Koln.
Kris Boeckmans (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) finished third with the same timing of the sprinter ahead of Michael Kurth and Yoeri Havik.
His team-mate Andre Greipel also showed a good performance in the race but he was not able to cross the group of 33 riders and finished 34th with a difference of 4 seconds ahead of Frank Dressler-Lehnhof and Stijn Joseph (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator).
Fabian Wegmann (Leopard Trek), Steffen Radochla (Nutrixxion Sparkasse) and Martin Reimer (Skil-Shimano) were in sixth, seventh and eighth place respectively.
Leopard Trek team was really disappointed with the performance of their riders while Fabian Wegmann was in sixth place and Dominic Klemme grabbed 83rd place.
