German Masson loses money race but happy with performance
German Caroline Masson fought a relentless battle till the final moment of season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, but she failed to maintain score in the last round, posting a 71 to finish tied for the third position.
Masson grabbed more attention than any other contender in the roster of four-day LET (Ladies European Tour) event, given an intense competition with Spanish Ciganda Carlota in the ISPS Handa Order of Merit 2012.
The German star was happy when she started her first round on Wednesday at the Emirates Golf Club, Dubai, because all she needed to do to win the ISPS Handa Order of Merit was finish inside the top 3.
Not only this, she also needed Ciganda to miss the cut, which would have earned her archrival a zero earning for the tournament.
Masson performed cautiously in all four rounds in order to remain inside the top 3, but her control on Ciganda was nonexistent. The Spanish star posted an overall score of 279 to finish tied for the 10th position along with five other players.
With plenty of experienced stars and young guns aiming for the limelight in the final LET battle, it was a nice performance in every sense, but Masson regretted losing a chance to win the money race.
She made no secret of her feelings while speaking at the end tournament, saying she displayed a good performance overall, but Ciganda deserved to win the race.
Masson further said that she has had a nice relationship with the Spanish golfer, despite rivalry on the course.
“She's a great player. She showed that all year. She won twice. Yeah, I'm happy for her. You know, right now, disappointed of course, but she's a great player,” Masson said of Ciganda who won two events and recorded another nine top-ten finishes in the 2012 season.
Masson said that she made a good start in the fourth round that saw her shoot a 71. However, she could not maintain her grip on the back nine, missing some good chances along the way.
“I think I've played really well, I was trying to go low today. I had it in my hands today, and did pretty well on the front nine and just got a little unlucky there. Yeah, that's what happens sometimes”.
