German Open GP Gold 2012: Lindaweni Fanetri stuns Carolina Marin in Women’s Singles round-of-16
Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri surprised everyone as she penetrated into Women’s Singles quarter-final after beating Spain’s Carolina Marin in the round-of-16 at German open GP Gold 2012 at Mulheim, Germany, on Thursday, March 1.
Fanetri, who is currently placed at number 46 in Women’s Singles world rankings, participated in this tournament as a qualifier.
However, she defied all odds and turned into a major contender by reaching at the top-eight stage.
The lower ranked Indonesian played to his maximum potential and overpowered her higher ranked Spanish opponent Carolina, who is World Number 26 at the moment.
Fanetri consumed 64 minutes in the court to stamp her supremacy over Carolina in a thrilling three-set contest.
In the opening set, both ladies played tremendous game by playing to their maximum potential and reached at 8-8.
Until the interval, the Indonesian remained successful in taking a reasonable lead of 11-8.
After the break, Fanetri continued her impressive run and stretched her lead by playing fast and positive badminton. She remained on track in the entire game and won it with a superb margin of 21-16.
In the second game, both shuttlers again played positive badminton in the first half. However, it was Spanish lady who took a small lead until the break.
After the interval, Fanetri tried to dominate the pace of rallies but failed as her Spanish rival was quicker this time. The Indonesian lost the second game with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the final set, Carolina was in complete control of rallies in the opening half and remained successful in taking a small lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Fanetri worked well in all areas of the court and also played aggressive badminton.
She pushed her opponent in both corners of rear-court area and levelled the score at 14-14.
At this stage, Fanetri did not lose her focus and played with precision. She did not commit any mistake and remained successful in taking the final set with a tight margin of 21-19.
The Indonesian won this Women’s Singles contest in 64 minutes with a 21-16, 17-21 and 21-19 score on the board.
