German Open GP Gold: Ville Lang overwhelms Christian Lind Thomsen in Men’s Singles round-of-16
Finland’s top player Ville Lang stretches his winning streak as he reached into Men’s Singles quarter-final after beating Denmark’s Christian Lind Thomsen in the round-of-16 at German Open GP Gold on Thursday, March 1, in Germany.
Lang, who is currently placed at number 42 in Men’s Singles world rankings, had to utilise all of his skills to overpower his lower ranked Danish rival, who put up strong resistance in the whole contest.
However, the Finnish managed to win the fight in three games by consuming 104 minutes in the court.
In the first set, Thomsen played remarkable badminton and troubled his higher ranked opponent by putting up superb show of attacking and positive game. He took a wonderful lead of 9-4 in the first half.
Nevertheless, Lang geared up his speed at net and took over the control from his Danish opponent. He played positive game and levelled the score at 9-9. Until the break, he was slightly behind his lower ranked challenger.
After the break, both players remained close as they played positive and attacking badminton. Lang committed a few unforced errors in the concluding phase of first set and lost it by a 19-21 score on the board.
In the following set, it was Lang who played to his maximum potential and remained ahead of his opponent until the break.
After the break, the Finnish stretched his lead by keeping the tempo of rallies quite fast. He was ahead at 13-9 when Thomsen became quicker and played positive game which helped him to level the score at 17-17.
At this stage, Lang showed his craft and remained successful in taking the ending points and won the set with a 21-19 score on the board.
In the decider, both players engaged the crowd by playing positive and attacking badminton and also remained close until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Lang remained on track while remaining focused in the game and won the final set with a remarkable margin of 21-16. The overall score of this thrilling contest was 19-21, 21-19 and 21-16.
At the quarter-final stage, Lang will take on Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto who defeated Lee Hyun Il of Korea in another pre-quarter-final encounter.
