German Open Grand Prix Gold: Mathias Borg outplays Maxime Moreels in Men’s Singles qualifying round
Sweden’s Mathias Borg found a good start as he powered his way into Men’s Singles main round after beating Belgium’s Maxime Moreels in the qualifying round of German Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 on Tuesday, February 28, in Germany.
The Swedish showed his elevated skills and overpowered his Belgian opponent in straight games by taking just 29 minutes in the court.
Moreels failed to match the speed of his rival and lost the match without taking even a single game.
Borg started the opening set in a controlled manner as he did not play hasty game. On the other hand, Moreels played with aggression but remained positive.
Both players put up good show of competitive badminton and progressed closely on the score board until the interval in the opening game.
After the break, Borg started to execute semi-smashes coupled with tight net shots which disturbed the flow of his rival.
Swedish shuttler remained positive and managed to set up a reasonable lead in the concluding phase of first game.
He did not lose his control over the pace of rallies and remained successful in taking the first set with a three-point advantage of 21-18.
In the second game, Moreels tried to dominate the pace in the first few rallies but failed to break the flow of his rival who was playing at his maximum best.
Borg took no time in setting up an early lead by playing positive and attacking badminton. He did not miss any chance to manipulate the loopholes of his rival and took a superb lead until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Moreels put up a meagre resistance by accelerating his speed but soon gave up as his opponent was playing on a different level. He could not control the bird at net and remained trailing far behind his challenger.
Borg played with wonderful accuracy as his strokes landed in the targeted areas and he ended the second game with a wonderful margin of 21-10.
The in-form Swedish emerged as the winner of this Men’s Singles 29-minute qualifying round contest with a 21-18 and 21-10 score on the board.
