If I was looking for a WORKING German Shep or 2 - one that would be used for livestock work and also property guarding, could any of you recommend a good breeder of top quality working dogs? It would be great if this breeder is in the Midwest or Southwest, but as this is a project that is going to take a looooong time until completion, any good breeder would be helpful as I could use their example for my research. Thank you!

  1. Try this kennel - they have German and Czech working lines that they breed, but their price is affordable. When I'm ready for another Shepherd I'm going to buy from there also because they have the Sable German Shepherds - not just Black and Tan At least two of their Shepherds work for police agencies in Southern Illinois and I have a friend who recommends them highly.

  3. Our black and red female came from this kennel in Marengo, IL.  She is amazing.  She is the fastest thing on four legs and is so eager to learn.  I have never seen a dog run with such joy.  She literally bounces!  Yet she'll sit like a statue when you tell her to stay.  I have recommended them to several other people, and they have been happy with their dogs, as well.  They have both show and working lines.

The place is immaculate.  Outdoor kennels are even screened in so that flies, etc., aren't bothering the dogs outside.  Owners are extremely knowledgeable about the breed and their capabilities.  I've seen kennels in our area (we're several hours away), and they don't come anywhere near the awesome experience I've had with this kennel.

I hope this helps!  Good luck in finding the right shepherd(s) for you!

  4. Can't help as I'm in the UK, but if you contact the local breed club - you should be able to find details from links here:

They should be able to help

  5. Here are a few with excellent working line dogs.

  6. try www.petfinder.com  their not breeders but then you would be saving an animal from a shelter.  you can look up dogs by age, gender, any area. Peace

  7. There was a kennel near Kokomo, Indiana called Edelheim Kennels, but I'm not sure it's still there--the last time we dealt with them was in the early 1980's, though, so I can't guarantee they're still in business.  The lady trained dogs for the police; the first time we got a puppy there, he was chewing on a bag of marijuana!  She also showed dogs--they were large German Shepherds, and their bloodlines were from Germany.  One of her dogs was a Grand Champion.

  8. I knew you were going to get at least ONE 'please go adopt' answer. I went and looked at the national club and from the looks of the listing you will have a pretty easy time finding a working line breeder

  9. Contact your local herding clubs or trainers.  Check AKC for titled Herding german shepherds.  Usually if you find people that are actually doing herding they will know who have the best dogs for that sport.
