Question:

German Vacation! When and where?

Going with a buddy. Two single guys from the States. He's into music (mainly metal and hip hop), castles, partying, and thick/borderline fat girls. I'm into sports, skyscrapers, hiking, military (ours and the worlds), and thick/tone girls. We're both into history and beer.

I've been to Germany twice and not seen a thing. Once for a three hour lay over on the way to Kuwait. The other on a three day lay in bed and not wake up on the way back from Iraq. So Landstuhl is a must.

I'd think we'll be there for 7-10 days. What other things could we do that would make us both happy with the trip? Are the festivities of Octoberfest worth the crowds?

  1. Well guys! Wot can I say ????

Depending in where and when you are thinking of travelling will make a lot of difference .... but if it´s the Beer Festival time then it´s got to be Munich ....

Today, the 'Oktoberfest' is the largest festival worldwide attracting a multitude of visitors.

Apart from beer tents the festival offers amusements as diverse as roller coasters, circus appearances, festival parades and live brass bands.

The ceremonial opening happens at noon. The mayor arrives in a festive coach followed by a decorated horse-drawn brewer's cart. Guests, staff and the numerous brass bands are all wearing traditional costumes (lederhosen and dirndls) for the occasion. At the end of the parade the major taps the first keg of beer and shouts, "o'zapft is!" (The keg is tapped).

It takes good nerves and a solid stomach to survive the festival's 16 days of intensive partying and drinking.

However, the festival is a huge success: Apart from attracting a multitude of visitors, the festivals brand name 'Oktoberfest' has been exported all over the world.

As you can probably tell, I have lived there most of my life and know it very well .... I have also found that if you are thinking of doing this then book early for accommodation and please believe me you will find plenty of company (male and female) with the same interests as you both!!!!

Have fun and enjoy the experience - in the mean time, Happy Christmas!

  2. I went to Germany and really liked it. I felt extremely safe like nothing would happen. I really enjoyed Hannover. There is a garden there call the royal gardens. Plus you can go and visit the stadium the some of the world cup games were played in. Word of advice don't wait to long for dinner most everything closes by six. If you are looking for castle look up some little villages that might have a museum you can go to. I went to one in Luchow. Look it up. Quite worth it. I have also been to Hamburg. I went to the soccer stadium there. Quite fun! I was in Berlin for a day or so. It is very interesting. Definitely go there. Look for the Brandenburg gate. Even if your friend is mostly into hip hop and rock. Go to Leipzig and go to the classical composer museums. I hope you have tons of fun! Oh and about the beer all my German friends like Becks. They don't really know about Budweiser. Drinking age there is 16 just so you know. If you would like any more information please e-mail me. I am planning on going back in the summer of 2008. Plus a hint make sure you keep track of the days. I ended up getting to the airport a day early. Plus some Internet cafes are for people 18 and over so.... just know that. Okay Hope you have fun!

  3. Heidelberg is worth visiting and Berlin as well!

  4. munich  is  s  must  ...also  Berlin is  great. I think  summertime  is  the  best  time to have  fun  in  germany . Have  Fun

  5. The Octoberfest, as the name suggests, will be over. But you should come to Hamburg, it is a really nice city to party! We have the famous Kiez, the Reeperbahn, which is an awesome red light district with bars, pubs and discos, and even a street, where women aren't allowed to walk through, the Herbertstrasse.

Castles and hiking are more to the south, in Bavaria. You can try to do a trip through the whole of Germany, from the south to the north or vice versa. Every city has its charms...

    Welcome to Germany!!

  6. Oktoberfest is a must. And yes it starts in late September.

Which is also the last good time to visit Germany. If you're

not into ****** up weather the best time (specially for

sightseeing) is from late May to mid September. Hamburg

and Berlin are both worth a visit. Great place for partying,

hanging out and watch some things. Berlin has some lovely

museums as well. Most castles that are still what they used

to be are located in the south. If you want to see one specific

one I would suggest to visit "Neuschwanenstein". It's probably

the most famous in Germany and likely one of the best

worldwide. And in case you're a "castle hog" there's another

one right on the opposite hill. Forgot it's name though.

You'll find good beer all over Germany. Just stay away from

the export stuff. I prefer northern beer but most seem to

like the southern versions more. If you're into military stuff.

There's a tank museum in Munster (located in the north).

There's also the "Deutsches Museum" which is located in

Munich. It's the world's largest technology museum.

    It's worth a visit.

  7. BERLIN IS A GREAT PLACE TO VISIT WE WERE THERE A FEW YEARS AGO. SEE THE BERLIN WALL AND LOT OF PLACES TO SEE, A GREAT CITY AND WORTH THE TIME TO GO TO.

  8. Head to the south of Germany.  I would make Munich your home base.  Hit the beer houses there.  If you like castles - you should check out Shloss Neushwanstein, which is only about 1-2 hour train ride from Munich.  Neushwanstein is the castle Disney used as a model for Cinderalla's castle.  Plus, the south of Germany is near the Tyrol and Alps - so there will be good hiking opportunities.
