German duo ready to go for gold at SWATCH FIVB Morocco Open - Beach Volleyball
The top-seeded German tandem of Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann is looking poised to grab the top position at the first edition of the FIVB Swatch World Tour in Aqadir, Morocco. The Morocco Open men’s beach volleyball tournament kicked off on Tuesday,
October 4 and it is set to complete its run on Sunday, October 9. So far, some thrilling matches have been played among the participants of this campaign but the Germans pair are the only team which has not dropped any match yet.
In their last match on Friday, they went up against the 8th-seeded duo of Peter Benes and Premysl Kubala of Czech Republic and captured the quarter-final match. The European champions dominated over their competitors and finished the match in straight sets,
2-0 (21-10, 21-16).
Germans started out in great style and easily managed to overcome the opposite side. They picked up an early lead and widened the gap of points. Solid spikes and excellent digging helped them dominate the Czechs in the opening set. They closed off the first
set with margin of 11 points, while the second set was also successful for Brink and Reckermann. They hit the mark with a 5-point lead and claimed victory.
Reckermann disclosed his thoughts after the match and stated: “Maybe it looked easy, but of course it is never easy on the World Tour. But our tactic worked well, especially in the first set. We served real short on Benes and he seemed to have trouble with
that. I also think we were more used to the heat on the centre court, because we played both our matches here yesterday.”
Brink and Reckermann are scheduled to take on Spain in their next fixture on Saturday. Fifth-seeded Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera will take centre stage with the pumped-up German duo at the semi-final match. This is surely going to be a cracking fight
as both teams are enjoying great form. The Spaniards just celebrated their victory over Brazil’s Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran in the last match on Friday.
Herrera hit the sand in Aqadir after nursing his knee injury from early July but gave out a wonderful performance in the previous matches. On the other hand, the German pair also missed two World Tour-events since Klagenfurt in early August, where they secured
the second spot.
Reckermann explained that they skipped the previous two stops of the SWATCH FIVB Tour for the sake of rest and now they are in good shape to make a comeback.
The German duo settled for tje third spot at the World Championships in Rome, won five medals including two silvers and three bronze on the World Tour this year and now eye the title trophy of the Morocco Open.
