  1. Try reading this...it should tell you everything you want to know...take it from a gal who married a German!!! It educated me!!!

A little late this year, but the count down has begun for next year!!!!

  2. Eat  drink and be merry

  3. It also was meant to celebrate the end of a hopeful great crop season and they always love a great excuse for a celebration. The answer above is correct this is just additional info, they kept the tradition going any many other parts of Germany have adapted a celebration that same time period each year. In Weimar it is the Zweibal Markt and that is the Onion Market. it is very much like October Fest.

So those are the two reasons I know of.

  4. FIRST... having a good excuse to get drunk in public

SECOND... I can't think of anything but the first reason

  5. The Oktoberfest used to be a fair of Bavarian agriculture, when it was founded. Itwas founded to help the Kingdom of Bavaria out of the depression after the Napoleonic wars.

Enough reasons? for mor, you cal look also www.munich.de

You could call it, at that time, also a "Thanksgiving Festival".

  6. What Fenris said actually is just half the truth. The big squires used to give out beer to their land workers halfway during harvest season; that's the reason why the Oktoberfest actually begins in September. And when the harvest was finished, they were given their yearly salary, and a free ride to the "Fest" (not necesseraly in Munich, but maybe in some smaller town), with the squires, of course, hoping for the good men to find a mate, and for the lesser, to spend all their money, so that they wouldn't have to hire them again, or for a lesser wage, if not just for food and lodging.

So that's the tradition it actually stems from. Not quite funny, is it? But it's the truth.

  7. Originally the first Oktoberfest was held to celebrate the wedding between Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The feast was such a success that they decided to hold the Oktoberfest every year.
