I am going to major in either German or Russian in College...but i am not sure which is better.

I know Russian is VERY hard, and i am worried about that but i like the language better.

I know basic swedish which is similar to German, so i think that might be easier for me.

Also if i study abroad which is the better country to go?

  1. I majored in German, so I may be biased somewhat.  Although I have always wanted to learn Russian and go to Russia, so I can see the draw there too.  I would say German is easier, but I wouldn't rule out Russian because of that.  Also, German is a good language if you want to get into international business.  I also lived in Germany, and while it is an adjustment, it's a great place to live.  Very safe, very interesting country.  Although someday I hope to go to Russia too.  I studied Russian civilization and literature a little bit in college too and I think Russia sounds awesome!  I think the pro/con list is a great suggestion though.  Either way, I think they are both good choices.

  2. Well you said it might be easier to do german because of your understanding of swedish.  Germany is a beautiful place so that might help with your study abroad.

    go with German.

  3. That's a personal decision!  However, if you think German will be easier because you know basic Swedish, then go for it.  However, I will admit, choosing one on easiness is NOT the way to go, although it surely seems like it!  :)  Have you looked at both countries and compared and contrasted?  As silly as it seems, making a PRO and CON list for each may be a good idea, especially in your case!  Are you drawn to both for a reason?  I think either will be difficult to be honest, so go with your heart, but a pro/con list can sometimes help make things easier.  Good luck to you!
