German pair reaches the Main Draw of Mazury Orlen Grand Slam– Volleyball News
Julia Grossner and Victoria Bieneck of Germany continued with their winning ways on day-2 of the SWATCH FIVB Mazury Orlen Grand Slam, which kicked off on Monday, August 13 in Stare Jablonki, Poland.
German duo defeated pairs from Norway and Italy in the qualifying matches on Tuesday. Success allowed Grossner/ Bieneck to book a slot in the Main Draw of the competition. Earlier on, German tandem played two Country Quota matches on the opening day and finished with 2-0 record.
Grossner/ Bieneck clashed with Janne Pedersen and Cindy Treland of Norway in their first qualifying match of the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam on Tuesday. German team caught a good start in the match and controlled the operations of the game until the set points. Norwegian side became irresistible and failed to stay in the way of German hits. Set-1 of the match ended in Germany’s favour at 21-14.
However, Mersmann/Tillmann improved in the following set and gave a good competition to German counterparts. They put in a great effort to save the match, but failed to do so. Grossner/ Bieneck secured second set with a margin of two points (21-19) and declared match victory.
Italy’s Laura Giombini and Daniela Momoli received the same treatment from German side in the second match. Germany’s Grossner and Bieneck showed great consistency in attack and defence, which led the team to 2-0 (21-18, 27-25) victory against Italian duo. Comparatively saying, Italians created more trouble for Germans than the Norwegian pair. Nonetheless, Grossner/ Bieneck successfully overcame the opponents and closed the day with 2-0 record.
“On the World Tour we always have to play the country quota round and that is always very hard. I’m satisfied we qualified. It is the second time we’ve reached the main draw this year so I’m very happy to be in the main draw,” said Bieneck after winning the qualifying matches.
In the meanwhile, her teammate Grossner had her say about the second match of the day. She stated: “That last match was really close, especially the last set. We just tried to think about the next ball.”
In the next run, the German pair is set to play three matches in Round 1 of the Main Draw. The duo will be tagged as Pool H team and it will be joined by pairs from Russia, Switzerland, and Poland. This is second time in the season time that Bieneck/ Grossner have clawed their way to the Main Draw. They have high hopes to do well in the upcoming matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
