  1. Just bear in mind that beer steins aren't typical of Germany even if many tourists think so. They are a south German thing - and have come to be considered typical of Germany because many US soldiers were stationed down south and then came home and thought what they had seen was typical for all of Germany.

So, to cut this short: If you're in the south, fine, go to the city centre, the pedestrian precinct if there is one. You'll find souvenir shops galore. If you're going to Berlin, Or Hamburg, or Cologne or somewhere else that is not southern Germany, forget about the steins and take the time to find out what is typical for the area you visited. Or just stick to the chocolates.

  2. In every big cities in Germany you can find many stores and they are selling the traditional souvenirs.

  3. For steins and other traditional German souvenirs, head to the "Altstadt" part of the city you are visiting. There are plenty of stores geared for tourists here. Visit a few stores and browse before buying.

As for chocolate, look for chocolatiers or "Konditoris".

  4. By North Sea maybe on island are very good souvenir shops or near famous signs

  5. In every city you can shop for all the items you mention.

Where are u going to be for a three days ?? That might help to narrow it down.

  6. Shopping in Germany is an experience you will never forget.

The answers about 'Altstadt'(old part of the city) are correct. In those areas depending on the size of the city there should be at least one shop or stand selling souvenirs. In the larger cities(Berlin, Cologne(Köln), Munich) the Churches are often tourist stops so you can find souvenir shops/stands nearby.

Beer Mugs(steins, whatever you want to call the things) can be found all over Germany. You have to understand that Germans are 'sensitive' about what Americans think is typical German. The 'The Sound of Music' was not a big hit in Germany, so Germans do not understand why Americans go to southern Germany(Bavaria) to see the Alps where Julie Andrews ran around singing. OK, she sang in Salzburg, Austria, but the closing scene where the family is hiking was Filmed in Germany. Plus the Oktober Fest in Munich in Bavaria is known world wide. Then again many Germans think a Cowboy is typical American and that south Florida is typical for the rest of the US.

For Chocolates, every major city or town has a candy shop or a bakery. Many of these places offer a locally made chocolate or candy packaged in a box with a picture of a local point of interest(Church, town square, landmark, etc.).

If you are going to be in the Frankfurt area you should make it over to the 'World's Biggest CooCoo Clock Shop' in Wiesbaden they have a large selection of your typical German Sounenirs(Beer mugs and steins, Christmas ornaments, the clocks, china, nut crackers, whatever). They speak English and can arrange shipping to the US. No Chocolates, but nearby is the central shopping area so you can find a candy shop fairly easily.

Good Luck and have a Fun Trip.
