German star Caroline Masson emerges victorious in South African Women’s Open
The South African Women’s Open is over and the results are no surprise for anyone following the tournament.
Caroline Masson, the golf start from Germany, won by a narrow margin of just one stroke. This win marks the first professional win by Masson, who has been struggling with near misses and missed opportunities so far.
Masson really deserved the title this year. She was on top of her game throughout the event and played some really great golf.
Talking afterwards about the win, she appeared excited and elated. She said, “I’m so happy. It was such a tough day with the wind”.
The last round was the toughest anyone could remember in the history of Selborne Park Golf Club. The gale force winds interrupted the game and at one time, the management considered cancellation of the round.
Masson said that the tournament really tested her patience, something she is not very good at. This is one lesson Masson will take home from the event, along with the trophy and a € 39,000 prize money.
The results are quite shocking for the fans of South African golfers, who were hoping that a local star will win the title and keep the trophy home.
Sadly, this did not come to pass and the defending champion, Tandi Cuningham, failed to perform. She came in fourth, with a score of 217.
Lee-Anne Pace, the South African star, came in second. She shot 216 points. When the weather turned foul in the last round, Pace thought that she had a chance.
Talking about it, she said, “I played really solid golf from the second round, and when the wind came up I knew I had a chance. I just stayed patient out there and made my pars”.
South African Women’s Open is now over and all the attention is now on the next big tournament on LET calendar, the Evian Masters. The confidence that Caroline Masson gained from this win will come in handy, when she will step on the French golf course.
Overall, the South African Women’s Open left a positive impact on women golf in South Africa. The next edition of the tournament will be more exciting as South African players will fight hard to regain the glory.
