German superstars shine at Wimbledon – Tennis News
World number one, Maria Sharapova, was stunned by the 15th seed German, Sabine Lisicki, in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships on Monday. She lost in straight sets 4-6, 3-6 and became the latest victim of
the series of upsets that happened at Wimbledon this season. Previously, the Seven-time French Open Champion, Rafael Nadal, bowed out to the unseeded Czech, Lukas Rosol, in an enthralling five-setter.
Sharapova made no excuses on her loss and stated this defeat will not halt her campaign of becoming the biggest ever threat in the world of women tennis. She stated, "Obviously, what I achieved a few weeks ago doesn't just go away
in a few minutes. I'll have that for the rest of my career. But the tennis world always keeps going. You have to raise your level at that point, even when your opponent plays really great tennis. As far as that motivation, of course you want to stay at the
top as long as you can. Obviously, everyone guns for that spot.''
It wasn’t her day at all. She was missing the simple winners and her serves were not finding the right spot in the opponent’s box. She was completely owned by the German starlet who made a stunning comeback from the ankle injury.
Lisicki lost in the opening round of the last four tournaments she contested but has been remarkable with her footwork and sublime technique at All England Lawn Tennis Club. Old Lisicki is back to own the world just like she broke into the Top-20 players from
outside the first 200 players last year.
Another eye-catching performance the German superstar, Angelique Kerber, was also witnessed on Monday. She dumped the former world number one, Kim Clijsters in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to book a date with Lisicki. The only German
that fell early at Wimbledon was Julia Goerges who had a tough draw in the third round of the tournament against the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic. Goerges won the opening set but couldn’t sustain the momentum and lost the following two sets.
It has been a very impressive tournament for the Germans so far and chance for Lisicki or Kerber to make a name for them by winning their maiden Grand Slam Championship.
