I'm going to germany on ym honeymoon in december to visit my new family.

I've never had a white winter (snow etc) and so I don't really know what to pack. We'll be there for a month and travelling around quite a bit.

What are some essential things for winter and also what's the best way to get around. We need to visit Hamburg, Berlin, Karlsruhe and Stuttgart.

  1. I grew up in Germany. German winters are usually somewhere between cold/rain and cold/snow. In Berlin it's usually a little colder, due to the further distance to the ocean. Hamburg is rather flat. I know they got more wind up there... I've been close to Stuttgart last winter and we had hardly any snow... it was rather wet and cold. Make sure you equip for this... if you're lucky you'll have a white winter... make sure to bring a warm jacket, gloves, a cover for your head, maybe some warm boots...

    Have fun coming to Germany...

  2. I'm originally from California, and moved over to Germany (near Hamburg) last year, and experience a rather "cold" (to me it was cold!) winter, even thought it wasn't as cold as it could have been.

Essentially, you will need more than enough long sleeved, warm shirts and sweaters. You'll need to layer, so make sure you have enough of these types of tops. You'll also needs some substantially warm tights to wear underneath trousers. Even though it was cold, I enjoy wearing skirts, and wore layered tights, usually a colored one on the bottom with a sheer black on top, which definitely kept me warm. Also long boots that go up to the knee, AND that are comfortable for walking, knee socks, and of course a heavy coat, umbrella and perhaps a hooded sweatshirt.

    Hope this helps:)

  3. I have lived in Germany now for 2 years.  I would bring a nice warm pair of boots that are comfortable to walk in.  Germans walk everywhere.  It is common to park your car in a parkplatz and walk several places.  Especially if your visiting scenic, tourista areas.  Bring layers of clothing.  I like to wear a nice pullover sweater that has a high collar or turtle neck under whatever coat I am wearing as this keeps the cold air from making me sick in the winter.  Gloves, Hat and sunglasses are essential.  It can get very bright in some areas if there is snow.  Mostly it rains too, if it is not snowing, so have a good umbrella  on hand.  Traveling by train is essential.  It is cheap and has many schedules.  Beware of traveling with lots of luggage. the trains don't allow alot of time to get off and on.  This has been a big complaint of many people going to the airport on train.  You are comming during the christmas season!  The Kristkindle markets are wonderful. If you plan on getting some souvinears, the Euro is very high against the dollar so go on line before you come to check the currency conversion, infact do it now if you haven't so you know how much to save.  Germany is very expensive if you are using going to exchange dollars in euro.  Once again, gas is very expensive here so I reccomend the train.  Germany is beautiful and rich in culture.  Best of luck!

  4. theres not very much snow even more because of change of climate, but it will be cold and windy and rainy and a bit snowy. I would take a warm coat, boots, maybe a cap and gloves.

  5. There is absolutely nothing to worry about. The winters in Germany are completey harmless compared with those in Canada or the northern US.

In Germany, in winter, you'll have temperatures during the day-time between 0 and 10 °C. It's a long time since I last had to go to work at -9 °C in the morning.

In the North (Hamburg & Berlin), expect lots of rain and extremely unpleasant wind.

In the South (Karlsruhe & Stuttgart), snow is more likely, but especially in December snow has been proven to be very unlikely for many years now.

As for clothing, to be warm it is more important to have things that don't let the wind through than it is to have something that is actually thick.

Also, try to protect yourself from the rain, as you don't want to be wet when it's cold and windy.

  6. the problem with being ur friend on this, is that i might wanna ask a reaaally personal question and ul get an email and access to it first class.

is our yahoo answers friendship worth my potential total humiliation? =p

ask yourself this. hmm best way to get around, blimps. no competition.
