Germans Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann qualify for the Olympic semi-finals – Volleyball News
Third-seeded Germans duo of Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann edged out Dutch counterparts, Richard Schuil and Reinder Nummerdor, in the semi-final of the Men’s Olympic Beach Volleyball tournament on Tuesday.
The German tandem worked out an amazing performance and held off the opposite team for 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) victory. All the action took place at the Horse Guards Parade in London, while the affair lasted for about 39 minutes. A large number of beach volleyball
enthusiasts came to watch the performance.
Brink-Reckermann maintained their supremacy on the centre court and recorded sixth straight win in the Olympic competition. The duo is now all set to meet Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti in the final showdown of the tournament on Thursday. The Brazilian
team defeated Latvia’s Janis Smedins and Martins Plavins in the other semi-final match on Tuesday. Emanuel-Alison are the reigning FIVB world champions and it will be a tough challenge for German pair in the final match.
Speaking of the semi-final match, Brink-Reckermann were quick to make their mark in the match. They showed power to the rival side with an onslaught of attack shots in the first set. Both German players perfectly complimented each other and frequently traded
places. They offered strong offense to the Dutch opponents and restricted them to a low score with solid defence. Schuil- Nummerdor failed to cope with the power of strong opponents and lost first set at 14-21.
The second set progressed in the similar fashion. German duo continued with success and dominated the scene. Brink made good use of his hands and mind, in order to land the ball in the gaps. Moreover, he varied the length of serves and added more points.
Meanwhile, Reckermann also joined hands with his partner and further influenced the rivals. They finished the second set at 21-16 and claimed victory in straight sets. Schuil and Nummerdor lost in the semis and now they will vie for the bronze-ware.
Brink shared his views after the match. He said: “It was a sensational win. We definitely have a medal, either gold or silver, one of those colours. I’m so proud of our performance. We knew it would be a great game and we kept the pressure on. We found out
this afternoon it would be Alison and Emanuel and their names stand out as the most dangerous team on tour. They’re number one and I can talk about that team for half an hour.”
