should we stay closer to the festival for more money or stay further or way and take the train in. We want it to be easy so is the train commute easy to figure out over there?

  1. Oktoberfest is right smack dab in the middle of Munich so you'll have no trouble getting there by rail, bus or foot.

I'd look for a village out of town where they too are having a beer fest, so you can sample that as well. Some of the smaller beer fests are more fun than the big one as Oktoberfest is full of tourists and not as traditional any more

  2. Hm, you do not have to be exactly next door to the Oktoberfest, but it should be at least within Munich. The S-Bahn should not be a problem. Extra trains and help everywhere. Just follow the mass.

  3. Trains in Germany are fairly easy to figure out - And Munich is pretty clear, even the S-Bahn.  I've been there a couple of times.

That said, for something like this, and mind you I've never been to Munich during Oktoberfest, I'd want to be as central as possible if I had the money.

  4. The trains are real easy to use and figure out I think so it is up to you. If you want peace and quiet at night when sleeping than go to a village nearby and stay and take the buses or trains in.

IF you are more up to being In the environment like at Disneyworld where you can stay AT the locale, you can find plenty of good places to stay in Munich and would be able to walk home or take buses.

Either way will work for you it really depends on how much you can afford and want to do. I personally would stay in Munich unless I had a friend nearby.
