Germany: SonnenBasserman?

Question

I need help from anyone living in Germany or going to visit there soon. Don't laugh at me - but I am CRAVING SonnenBasserman's Schlimmergulasch!!!! I smuggled about 10 boxes into the USA with me on my last trip over there - but now they are all gone. I searched, and searched the internet, and cannot find anyone who will ship this item to me. I even contacted several European Food Importers in the USA and they said they can't get it for me. Is there some out there who I can either:

1.) pay (or pay you back for the cost of the item)

or

2.) send you something from over here that you can't get over there?

PLEASE SOMEONE SAY YES! I need my Schlemmergulash and Sauerbraten. I know this sounds stupid - but they are great to bring to the office for a nice German lunch.

Maybe, you can get your Schlemmergulasch at http://www.germandeli.com - it's a German online store (based in Texas) and they has lots of German products you can buy online there, but unfortunately, they're also quite expensive.

Another idea: why you don't write an email to SonnenBassermann and ask them if they could mail you some cans over - and you'll pay them for the postage.  Their website is http://www.sonnenbassermann.de - and their contact link is:  http://www.public.sonnen-bassermann.de/i...  The guys at Bassermann would be thrilled to help you! ;-)

Unfortunately, I cannot ship them to you -- I am unemployed and postage is VERY VERY VERY expensive over here in Germany....sorry.

I would solve the problem the following way:

I would write a letter to SonnenBassermann lamenting your problem and either ask them to kindly start exporting Schlemmergulasch to the USA or to send  you the recipe so that you can cook it at home.

BTW, there are also some cooking sites online that teach you in English how to to cook German food. Do a google search.

The biggest difference I found compared to common recipes of goulash available online was that Schlemmergulasch is made out of porc. (I found a list of the ingredients online). It also contains basic vegetable stock (carrots, onions, leeks, celery root ) and a sprinkle of German brown mustard.

Some vendors on ebay offer Sonnen Bassermann packages (see link below) - you just need to convince them to ship it to the US, shouldn't be so much of a problem.Looks like they are professional vendors, maybe you could ask them to put a special delivery for you together, consisting only of Schlemmergulasch?

That being said, I don't know if theres a way to get that through customs...

While on vacation in Florida we went shopping at Gooding's Super Market. They are a Florida based micro chain. I was astonished by the amount of German provissions they sell. Give them a call maybe they stock your Schlemmergulasch or can provide you with the number of an wholesaler in the US. They even sold German coffee beans !!! Try this eabay seller also :

He is not offering Gulasch but you can ask him if he will. He does ship to the US.

Well I have lived in Germany off and on for over 20 years.  I can't say I have heard of Sonnen Basserman.  Is that in a can or is it just the dry sauce package?

I know that you cannot ship any meat products, even dried tortellini with meat filling.  That whole procedure cost me $2600 by the time all was said and done.  My wife at the time mailed herself boxes of German foods to our new address at Ft Campbell.  The boxes got to me, minus the meat containing foods and plus a nasty letter from Customs and the FDA.

So if we are talking just sauce packages I can look for them and help you out.

Had to laugh so hard at Schrecklishgulasch.
