FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup came to an end on Sunday, August 1st, 2010. Hosts’ Germany managed to retain the title after battling with a ferocious Nigerian team. This was the second time that Germany has won after scoring two goals on their home ground. The German ladies made sure that they won all six matches by netting a total of 20 goals and allowing only five in their net.
Nigeria gave them a tough time and nobody could speculate the fate of the match after the first half. The women from Africa managed to gather a great deal of attention by being the first African team to grab a medal at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Earlier that day, the Koreans managed to win against Colombia with a score of 1-0. Ji So Yun, the Adidas Silver Shoe and Silver Ball winner, netted the only goal of the match and saved the match from ending into a stalemate. The play had not been less important for the Colombians, as it was their maiden entry in the FIFA World Cup. The results for the four finalists are as follows: Korea Republic beat Colombia 1-0 and Germany over power Nigeria 2-0 to lift the cup.
The goals of the day for the final were no less than an uphill task. Charging with a lot of excitement and pressure, Dzsenifer Marozman advanced for the goal of the day and played off the unmarked Alexandra Popp in the right. The second goal was completed by the tournament’s top scorer by manoeuvring the ball along Alaba Jonathan which landed in the Nigerian goal. This gave the Germans an initial boost that acted as a foundation for their victory.
The match had many memorable moments. The Germans win accompanied some breathtaking fireworks as their emotions were translated into rays of light in the sky. These jiffies included feelings of pride, patriotism and heroism for German fans across the globe. The fireworks lit up the Women’s Stadium in Bielefeld, Germany as the elevated females then acknowledged the support of their fans, who further added to their excitement by echoing the golden words “champions, champions.”
Moreover, the match for the 3rd and 4th position was equally competitive. The Koreans displayed acts of gleefulness after taking over Colombia. It appeared as the team had won the title. They first thanked the Germans for uplifting their morale and then flipped their coach and his substitutes into their air. Later, they cheerfully soaked their supervisor’s uniform in water.
One of the integral parts of the FIFA Women’s World Cup was its lively and bubbly fans. Although, it was the performance of the players that brought life to the tournament; the spirit infused by the fans in the game cannot be ignored. The natives of Germany set a new record for attendance in FIFA World Cup, making it one of the most visited football festivals in the world. The last three weeks welcomed throngs of Germans and spectators from different parts of the world. Nearly 365,265 FIFA fans occupied stands in Dresden, Bielefeld, Augsburg and Bochum. An estimated average of 12,352 enthusiasts attended the game with the figure doubling for the final.
This is the second time Germany has won the FIFA Women’s World Cup U-20, equaling the record set by USA. Their first victory came in Thailand in 2004 against the Republic of China by scoring two goals in the final. Although many spectators and fans anticipated Germany’s victory, the nation was overwhelmed by its continuous achievements. President FIFA Joseph Blatter congratulated the team for achieving the milestone. He explained that he used the term “milestone” because FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup fulfils two objectives - laying a firm foundation of women’s football and recognition of the tournament in the international calendar. He said that since FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 will be held in Germany, the FIFA U-20 was a rehearsal that would magnify the chances of the Germans winning the title once again.
