Germany defeat Spain in preliminary round, Group B: Day four – European Water Polo Championships
German squad defeated Spain in their third Men’s water polo qualifying match of Group ‘B’ on fourth day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Thursday, January 19 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
Germany remained dominant over Spain throughout the match. Their exceptional efforts and breath-taking performance enabled German team to claim victory over their challenging team with a score of 16-10 in the four-quarter game.
Tobias Kreuzmann of Germany scored two goals for his team in the initial two minutes of first quarter to place his team in a strong position. On the other side, the Spanish squad managed to score two goals but their effort was overwhelmed by German players shortly, who scored two more goals to make the score 4-2 after first round.
Both teams advanced their efforts in the second quarter, where Spain tried to prove its ascendancy over Germany by accomplishing four goals. Their effort surely placed them in a better position but was inadequate to threaten German squad that notched up five goals in the same round and extended its lead to three goals. The score went up to 9-6 after the first half.
Just like the first quarter, German players wasted no time and achieved four goals to supplement on the scorecard. In contrast, the Spanish team improved on the points table by achieving two goals only and the score remained 13-8 after the third round.
The score remained on a tight leash in the fourth quarter, where the Germans scored three goals and Spain succeeded in grabbing two goals. Nevertheless, with their invincible efforts, the German players succeeded in superseding their opposing team by a margin of six goals.
Marc Politze and Kreuzmann of Germany scored four goals each in the match and played a vital role in the victory of their team.
German squad has played three matches in the tournament so far and this was their first victory, which has placed them on the fourth spot on the overall rankings list. In addition, Germany will play its fourth match against Hungary on Saturday, January 21.
