Germany defeats Peru by 3-1: FIVB World Grand Prix - Volleyball
Germany and Peru competed against each other in one of the last matches in the preliminary round of the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix on August 20th. The match between the two teams stretched into four sets at the end of which the Germans had cobbled
together a 3-1 win in Hong Kong.
The first set of the match was Germany’s from the start as the Peruvians were trying to get into form and it did not take much time for Germany to bag the opening set. The second set saw Peru begin with determination and force Germany to back off as the
Peruvians headed towards a win. The third set of the game started out tough but eventually Germany was able to assert itself and secure the set. Playing with a deficit in the fourth set, the Peruvians were not energetic and lost what was to be the final set
of the match with relative ease. As a result, the final set scores stood at the following figures: 25-14, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-18.
The coach of the German team, Giovanni Guidetti, shared his feelings in the following words at the press conference after the match: “This has been a tight match. We learned from Peru as they set a good example of good sports spirit. We especially appreciate
Peru’s persistence throughout the game. Although we won the match, I am disappointed with our team’s performance as they did not learn that they do not have enough talent to excel if they do not stretch themselves to their one hundred percent.”
On the other hand, the Peruvian coach, Luca Cristofani gave these statements after his team had lost the match: “This tournament allows us to know where we are and what we need to improve on. When we go back to our country, we would need to work especially
on passing, servicing, rotation and attacking.”
Durong the match, the Germans were leading the opening set at 4-0 and took the advantage to 8-4. Peru tried to close in the gap but the Germans still had the lead at 16-11 at the second technical time out. After that point, the Germans were not challenged
and sailed smoothly towards a first set win at 25-14.
The second set saw Peru take the lead at 4-0 which was extended to 8-4. Peru was able to lead all the way until the end of the set at 25-20. The third set of the match remained tight in the initial stages but the Germans eventually took the lead and were
able to finish off the set at 25-19.
The fourth set was competitive in the middle stages when the Germans were able to wrench the advantage and speed on towards a win at 25-18.
Despite the fact that her team lost the match, Peru’s Baylon Francis was able to lead all scorers by tallying a total of 24 points on the score board while the top German scorer was Christiane Furst with 15 points.
