Germany defeats US by 3-2 in FIVB World League Finals – Volleyball news
A Pool E match of the final round of the FIVB World League took place between Germany and USA on Thursday, July 5, 2012 in the Bulgarian city of Sofia which is playing host to the matches. The contest between the two sides was held in the Arena Armeec which
housed an audience of 3000. It took Germany five sets to hand out a defeat to the Americans and grab themselves a chance at moving on to the semi final round of the tournament.
The 3-2 win was achieved by Germany after two hours and 20 minutes with the score board showing the following final set scores: 20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 and 16-14.
The coach of the German side, Vital Heynen expressed his satisfaction with the win by making the following comments, “The most important thing for us was that we played much better than yesterday. Now we will see what will happen tomorrow and probably, if
the Bulgarian teams helps us to qualify for the semi-finals, I will ask my wife and kids to move to Bulgaria.”
On the other hand, the US coach Alan Knipe shared his views at the outcome of the match by giving the following statements, “Germany certainly fought for the victory. We knew that it would not be easy, but it is frustrating to how slight the difference was
between the two teams. It seems we struggle to maintain high standard constituency.”
Despite the fact that the Americans lost the match, they were still able to get the title of top scorer as Clayton Stanley led his team by tallying 22 points. On the other hand, the highest number of points scored on the German side was by Denys Kaliberda
who put up a tally of 18.
The opening frame of the game saw the US take the lead at 8-6 but Germany managed to pull up. The US had the lead again at 16-12 but after the two sides came back on to the courts, Germany overtook their opponents to take the advantage at 17-16. However,
they could not hold on to the lead for long as US came from behind and bagged the first set at 25-20.
The second set was tied at 5-5 but the Germans were leading later on at 19-14. Once they had the lead, the Germans did not let go of the advantage and secured the second set at 25-21.
The US was able to bounce back in the third set with the score tied at 16-16. The lead went to the Americans later on who eventually grabbed the frame at 25-21.
The Germans came out strong in the fourth set and took an early lead at 8-1. They did not let go of the advantage till the end at 25-20. The fifth set was highly competitive but Germans were the ones who secured it at 16-14.
