Question:

Germany dental care?

by  |  earlier

I am going to be in Munich this summer and I was wondering if anyone knows how reliable and how expensive dental care is. I need all four of my wisdom teeth removed, and I was hoping it might be cheaper there than in the US (I don't have insurance).

If you have any FIRST-HAND knowledge of health/dental care in Germany, please respond.

Thanks!

  1. As a rule you should never travel abroad without health insurance. I know it can be freaking expensive but if you ever had the joy of spending time in a Russian hospital (like I did) you'll understand the necessity.

Health care in Germany is generally very good. It gets even better when you are not on Government health insurance, but on private insurance or want to pay cash.

Note that you will find it hard to get reliable answers how much dental care is going to cost you here, as the very large majority of Germans (over 98 %) are insured. As a matter of fact it is illegal for a foreigner to enter Germany without having appropriate health insurance.  People who need a visa or who apply for a residency permit have to show proof of insurance to the authorities.

The only reliable address where to ask about the cost would be a dentist. Be prepared to pay an arm and a leg, as you would be in private care (only rich people do this in Germany). Without an insurance company behind you the dentist can pretty much charge you anything s/he wants.

http://www.toytowngermany.com should be able to provide you with the address of a good, english-speaking dentist in Munich.

  2. I know this one first hand. In 2001 my friend suffered from a horrible tooth ache and we had to take her to the dentist.

She had no insurance and all he did was check her mouth out, give her a shot and some medication and told her to have her dentist in the USA look at it when she returned next week and this would help her until then with any pain and prolems and come back if it gets worst.

It did not but the cost was about 375 euro! It can be expensive. I would definately call and ask a place the cost i am sure they differ office to office if you have no insurance.

I know in some states in the US like mine if you need major dental work done and don't have insurance or the money you can get State vouchers that will pay the dentist for the work. They only cover necessary work not cosmetic though.

    Good luck

  3. I guess it might be cheaper to get this done in Poland or the Czech Republic, which isn't too far from gernamy, so maybe you should look into that.

  4. it is very expensive in Germany too.

Munich is not so far away from the Czech Republic and there the costs are approximatly 75% cheaper than in germany and the dentists are very good. a lot of germans cross the border just to get the teeth fixed.

  5. The German health care system is excellent - but also very expensive. Most Germans have medical insurance which covers even most dental bills. But for those without proper health insurance there is a problem
