Germany earns first win in FIVB Volleyball Men´s Junior World Championship
The German team could not earn a single win in the first round of the FIVB Volleyball Men´s Junior World Championship that is being held in Brazil. However, Germany turned a corner on August 5th by handing out a defeat to Puerto Rico in the second
round of the tournament. Not only did Germany win the match, they did so by defeating their opponents after an intense four set struggle.
The Puerto Ricans lost the first set by quite a margin but stepped up their efforts in the second set of the game. Although the Germans had a tough time, they were still able to scrap off a win in the second set. The loss of the first two sets of the game
did not sit well with the Puerto Rican squad and they battled with all they had in a thrilling third set which the Germans lost in the end. However, the Puerto Ricans had no energy left in the fourth set as Germany was able to secure an easy win. The final
set scores stood at the following points: 25-14, 25-22, 32-34 and 25-12.
The German coach, Stewart Bernard, expressed himself in the following manner at the end of the match: “It was not a very good match. We had luck because Puerto Rico gave us many opportunities."
On the other hand, the Puerto Rican coach, Carlos Rodriguez gave the following statements at the press conference after the match: “We lost because of distraction and the German block. We had problems with our receptions."
Germany was able to get a lead early on in the first set at 17-3 which they were able to extend to 24-10 with almost no challenge from the Puerto Ricans. It was only a matter of time before Germany sealed the deal at 25-14.
The start of the second set saw the Puerto Ricans get the lead at 8-2 and they were able to extend it up to 11-9 but the Germans did not give up the chase and took the lead for themselves at 23-17. After that point, the Germans did not relinquish their advantage
and bagged the set at 25-22.
The third set saw the Germans take the lead at 8-7 that got extended till 14-10. However, the Puerto Ricans prevailed in getting the advantage at 18-14. When the final stages of the set were reached, Puerto Rico was at set point at 24-21 but Germany was
able to get a tie. The fight went on till the match ended on Puerto Rican terms at 33-32.
After that, the Puerto Ricans seemed to be sapped of all their energy as they let the fourth set slip easily out of their hands at 12-25.
With their recent win, the Germans have been able to tally a record of 1-0 in Pool H while the Puerto Ricans cradle a 0-1 statistic.
