Germany jumps straight into action with victory over Thailand – Women’s Volleyball
The Girls’ National Under-19 Volleyball team of Germany posted a great win over Thailand on the opening day of 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship. The tournament was officially opened on Friday, August 12 and the action will continue until the 21st
of this month. Germany and Thailand played under the tag of Pool D, which also has Japan and Italy in the group. It was the first meeting of two teams in the competition. European girls launched authority over Asian competitors and finished the game with final
score of 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, and 25-20). The beautifully designed Ankara Sports Hall in Ankara, Turkey, hosted the wonderful performance, which was thoroughly enjoyed by fans.
Germany opened the match in great style and put away powerful serves via Juliane Langgemach. The Thai players seemed scattered in the opening phase of the game and had difficulty in reception. German took full advantage of opponents’ weakness and picked
up 3-point lead at the first technical timeout (FTT). As the game progressed, the difference of points further stretched out and Thailand was moved into the blue corner. Feeble attack attempts and improper defence led them to the loss of opening set by 25-18.
The first set win was mainly credited to German spikers Aulenbrock as well as Liza Izquiero, who provided an edge to their team.
Thailand tried to change the mood of the game in the following set. They had obviously learned a lesson in the opening set. However, the charged-up Germans enjoyed great form and looked pretty dominant in the game. The German opposite Carina Aulenbrock was
quite active on hitting accurate shots. She put her team in the lead with 2-point margin the FTT (8-6). Ajcharaporn Kongyot of Thailand offered a bit of resistance but German side remained remarkably persistent in leading the scores. Keeping the same energy,
Germany closed off second set with 25-16 victory and extended its lead to 2-0.
Germany put immense pressure on Thailand in third set and denied all of their efforts to return in the game. With better combination of attack and defence, Germans cruised past to third-set win at 25-20 and announced victory in their first fixture of 2011
FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship. Germany bagged 3 points for winning the match in straight sets.
Jens Tietböhl, the German coach disclosed his thoughts after the match. He said that his players were nervous as it was their first match of the tournament but they did a great job to overcome the opponents. He expressed delight and appreciated the strong
serving of his side, which really made a difference for the Germans. Nonetheless, Tietbohl also wished Thailand fgood luck for their next match against Italy on Saturday. Meanwhile, his Thai counter-part, Jarun Niemtuptim, also had his say in the following
manner. He stated: “We didn’t show our best performance today. The level in practice was much better. I hope tomorrow we’ll be able to play better.”
Germany’s captain Jennifer Geerties commented: “We were very excited playing our first match here in Turkey. Fortunately, we managed to play our best volleyball in the most important moments of the match.”
