The former Bayern Munich man feels Germany lack a genuine superstar.
Die Mannschaft have had a somewhat disappointing Euro 2012 warm up campaign. Matthaus cites the absence of a genuine match winner as the reason why Joachim Low’s have not performed when it matters.
Although the squad is full of talented players, but the former Bulgaria coach believes that the current crop of players are not on the same level as Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 51-year old is of the opinion that DFB eleven have a lot of players of similar quality and there is not a single player who stands out from the rest of the squad. Although Matthaus is an admirer of Mesut Ozil but he believes
that the Real Madrid midfielder cannot win matches single-handedly, and cannot be compared to the Barcelona Number 10.
"I am always pretty cautious when people say that one player could single-handedly help his side to a trophy. Ozil obviously has a lot of quality, but so does Sami Khedira as holding midfielder," he is quoted as saying in an interview.
The former Bayern Munich midfielder also analyses the role of Schweinsteiger in Die Nationalelf. The midfielder, who has not completely recovered from his calf injury, and is still hurting from the Bavarian clubs defeat by Chelsea
in the 2012 UEFA Champions League final.
Matthaus is of the opinion that Schweinsteiger's role in the team is over rated, and no player in the world is irreplaceable. He also states that the Germans are capable of replacing the 27-year old if he gets injured.
"He is still not fully recovered from that calf injury, and is fighting the disappointment of the lost Champions League final. Nobody is irreplaceable in the national team, though. We don't depend on Schweinsteiger," he added.
Major tournaments are a tough place to perform when people have high expectations from you. Lionel Messi, the best player in the world, failed to live up the expectations in the 2010 world cup.
Will the current crop of German youngsters perform at the Euro 2012 or will crumble under pressure remains to be seen.
